Australian media denied access to athletes: Report

Australian media denied access to athletes: Report
New Delhi: Australian media was reportedly denied the permission to interview the Aussie gymnastics team at airport when the contingent arrived in Delhi to participate in the Commonwealth Games to be held from October 3-14.

Australia's gymnastics team was "strangely denied" a chance to speak to the waiting reporters after their touchdown at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport late on Monday, according to a report.

The report said that Australian media was waiting for the team for almost three hours to speak, specially to gold medal prospect Lauren Mitchell, but police told newsmen shortly before the arrival that they would not be able to ask any question.

"You will not speak to them, you will never speak to them," one inspector told reporters.

The reporters had already lined up interviews and had earlier spoken to Australian athletes at the same location when first lot of their contingent arrived on Monday morning.

Despite protests by Australian officials, the gymnasts were ordered to board their bus. Athletes, however, waved and smiled at the cameras, the report said.

It is believed, reporters from other nations were also denied access to the arriving athletes at airport on Monday, it added.

Australia's netballers, women's hockey team and track cyclists were among the contenders who will also arrive to participate in the quadrennial show-piece event.
