New Delhi:
Canada's Brent Hayden on Saturday made it a sprint gold double after winning the men's 50m freestyle in a new Games record.
The 26-year-old's time of 22.01 seconds was 0.02 of a second inside the previous best by Roland Schoeman of South Africa. Schoeman - who won the event at the last two Games - won silver with teammate Gideon Louw in bronze.
Hayden this week won the 100m freestyle with the world's fastest time for 2010.
He was the fastest of the finalists on time this year going into the shorter sprint and looking to go one better than the silver he won in Melbourne four years ago.
But he has been suffering from a stomach bug that has hit dozens of swimmers this week.
The win is Canada's third swimming gold. Ryan Cochrane won the 400m freestyle and is looking to double up in the men's 1,500m freestyle final later Saturday.
The 100m win made Hayden only the fourth male swimmer from Canada to win a medal in three Games.
There was no repeat of the semi-final of the event, which saw Australia's Ashley Callus disqualified, leading to a blistering attack by Schoeman on spectators for not keeping quiet while the swimmers were on their blocks.
Louw was the fastest qualifier and his silver comes after he was fourth in the 100m freestyle.
Schoeman, 30, was second fastest behind Hayden on time this year going into the competition. His silver is one better than his bronze in the 50m butterfly.
