CWG corruption trail: Tax evasion?

New Delhi: Fresh details have emerged of the multi-pronged probe launched by the government into allegations of massive corruption in organising the Commonwealth Games. One of the key agencies that is part of the probe is the Income Tax department, which paid a visit to the offices of the Organising Committee (OC) yesterday.

NDTV has learnt that "it is scrutinising financial documents relating to the broadcast rights for the Commonwealth Games following charges of alleged tax evasion".

Sources say IT is also examining the terms of operations in the contract documents for the broadcast rights given to a London-based company.

The department has already carried out survey operations on the Indian arm of the London-based company and has found alleged discrepancies to the tune of crores of rupees in the tax statements of the company.

Sources said the department is also probing the financial and banking channels through which the money was paid to the company by the OC.

The Enforcement Directorate and the I-T department, which are working closely on this case, are also likely to issue summons to Commonwealth Games Organising Committee officials soon.

Selection of tainted officers

The BJP chief Nitin Gadkari has demanded that the investigation should focuson every aspect of the spending on the Games. Gadkari also claimed that he willreveal everything on the CWG corruption today.
