New Delhi:
BJP Parliamentary Party Chief L K Advani on Monday said the accommodation built for athletes at the Commonwealth Games Village was to be turned into a Delhi University hostel after the event but by reversing this decision the organisers have cheated the students.
The contract for organising the Commonwealth Games 2010 was bagged by India in 2003 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA was in power.
"The then Lt Governor of Delhi, Vijai Kapoor, wrote to the Union Government recommending that the accommodation that was to be constructed for the athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games should be of a nature so that it could be later used as a hostel for the Delhi University. The Vajpayee Government readily agreed to the proposal," Advani wrote in his blog.
India defeated Canada with 46 member countries voting in its favour and 22 against.
Advani said the plan to allot the accommodation for athletes to DU students was later overturned.
"But later on, after the change of Government in New Delhi in 2004, officials interested in securing posh apartments for themselves after the Games were over, had different ideas," he said.
Advani says in this whole process, the students of Delhi university would feel cheated.
"Suresh Kalmadi and his associates may be happy, but how would Delhi University students feel about all this? Would they not feel cheated?" he asked.
