India's golden boys clinch doubles title in table tennis
New Delhi: Favourites Sharath Kamal Achanta and Subhajit Saha of India brought a noisy home crowd to its feet to take gold in the Commonwealth Games table tennis men's doubles on Wednesday.

The top seeds beat Singapore's Gao Ning and Yang Zi in a tense final, going behind in the first set before rallying to level the match and then taking a fifth set decider 11-8 at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

Achanta had courted controversy earlier in the day when he blamed his own fans after going out of the singles in a thrilling semi-final.

"The crowd was a big distraction for me and playing on home ground already had me under pressure," he said. "The spectators' loud support put additional pressure on my mind."

The silver makes Yang the first man to win six medals in table tennis at the Commonwealth Games.

England's Andrew Baggaley completed the full set of Games doubles medals when he won the bronze with Liam Pitchford.

The pair beat William Henzell and Robert Frank of Australia 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-6 in the third place play-off.

Baggaley won gold in 2002 partnering Gareth Herbert and silver in 2006 with Andrew Rushton.

He and Pitchford captivated the crowd with a dogged display, exuberantly celebrating each point in the deciding fifth set.
