Lethal Leisel makes it three in a row - again
New Delhi: Australia's Leisel Jones on Friday won her second gold medal, adding the 100m breaststroke to the 200m title in her third straight win in the events in successive Games.

Jones surged away after a strong turn to touch home in 1min 05.84sec - just outside her own Games record - leaving a battle for silver and bronze between teammates Samantha Marshall, Sarah Katsoulis and England's Kate Haywood.

Marshall edged past Haywood to make it an Australia one-two. Katsoulis came fourth ahead of Canada's Annamay Pierse, the 200m breaststroke world record holder.

Jones is now the third woman to win nine gold medals in the history of the Games.

"I would have liked to go faster, but a gold medal is a gold medal," the 25-year-old said afterwards. "The 100m is my best event and I always have a lot of fun swimming it."

She was also full of praise for 18-year-old Marshall, who described her silver as "unbelievable".

"It's great for Sam to get up and win a silver medal," the experienced Jones said.

Jones - a double world champion and Olympic silver medallist - had been looking for the breaststroke treble in New Delhi.

But she had to settle for silver behind teammate Leiston Pickett in the 50m event. England's Haywood, who is based at the same Melbourne club as Jones, also took bronze in the sprint.

The race could have thrown up an Australia clean-sweep as Jones, Katsoulis and Marshall were the fastest on times this year.

Jones - the second quickest woman at the distance in the world this year - showed her form coming into the Games following a sabbatical in 2009, taking two silver and a bronze at the Pan Pacifics.

Katsoulis won bronze in the 200m breaststroke earlier this week.
