Now, part of false ceiling of CWG venue collapses

Delhi: A small portion of a false ceiling at the weightlifting arena at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium has collapsed, causing more embarrassment to the organisers and the government a day after the collapse of an under-construction foot over-bridge.  (Read & Watch: Foot over-bridge at Games' venue collapses)

According to the Centre, three panels had fallen in a non playing area of the Weightlifting  stadium and the agency concerned had been asked to ensure this never happens again. No one was hurt in the incident.

This is the second incident of collapse in the past three days inside the stadium complex. (Read: CWG mess: Govt unmoved by reports, says BJP)

On Monday, a canopy collapsed in which two police personnel, including an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, suffered minor injuries. In another incident on Tuesday, an under-construction foot over-bridge outside the Complex collapsed when labourers were engaged in work. 27 labourers were injured.

The Delhi High Court has ordered the Delhi Labour Commissioner, Deputy Labour Commissioner and Assistant Labour Commissioner to visit the under-construction sites and file an affidavit within a week or face jail.

But state Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit dismissed the collapse of the over-bridge as a 'minor' incident and said it would not be rebuilt. She said that alternate arrangements are being considered. (Foot-bridge collapse minor incident, says Sheila Dikshit)

"These minor glitches do happen. But do not make it look like whole thing has collapsed. They are not insurmountable problems. For past month there are incessant rains. Sure it is a problem, but not a major one," she said.

Also, trying to calm things down a bit, cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar said that in spite of shortcomings everything will be ready on time.
