New Delhi:
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and a number of other VVIPs, were present on Thursday in a packed Dhyan Chand Stadium to cheer the Indian team as they took on world and defending champions Australia in the Commonwealth Games men's hockey final.
However, the result of the game was a huge disappointment as the men in blue crashed to a humiliating 0-8 defeat against the mighty Australians.
PM came to the stadium just before the scheduled commencement of the tie and watched its progress along with Olympians Zafar Iqbal, Balbir Singh, Ajitpal Singh, Ashok Kumar and others till its conclusion.
Along with Singh were some members of the Cabinet, which included Home Minister P Chidambaram, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and Sports Minister M S Gill, and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Fans had started pouring into the stadium from morning and the stands were jam packed. As soon as the Indian players entered the field, they cheered them with slogans of "India, India" and "India Jitega".
In the beginning, the scene inside the 16,000 capacity stadium was electric. However, towards the end, silence gripped as India were at the receiving end.
Singh later met and greeted the players of both the teams.
