New Delhi: Hannah Miley on Saturday won the women's 400m individual medley in a new Games record to give Scotland its second swimming gold.
The 21-year-old swam a superb second half of the multi-stroke race to finish in 4:38.03 but had to hang on as Australia's Samantha Hamill came back at her. Hamill got silver with England's Keri-Anne Payne in bronze.
Miley was favourite going into the final in the absence of Australia's triple Olympic champion Stephanie Rice, who set the previous Games best in Melbourne four years ago but is recovering from a shoulder injury.
The Scot was more than 4.5 seconds faster than Hamill before the competition. She won the European title in Budapest in August and picked up a bronze in the 200m individual medley in New Delhi.
Scotland's Robbie Renwick won gold for Scotland in the 200m freestyle this week. Miley's win came a race after teammate Michael Jamieson grabbed silver in the 200m breaststroke.
Hamill, 19, won silver at the Pan Pacifics in Irvine, California, in August.
South Africa-born Payne, 23, is a World Championships and Olympic gold medalist over 10km and an open water champion. She came sixth in the 400m individual medley in Melbourne.
