New Delhi:
Robbie Renwick gave Scotland its first swimming gold medal on Tuesday, after winning a closely-fought men's 200m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.
The 22-year-old's strong finish was enough to clinch a race that looked too close to call in 1:47.88, just 0.02 of a second ahead of Australia's Kenrick Monk. Monk's teammate Thomas Fraser-Holmes came third.
South Africa's Jean Basson, celebrated his 23rd birthday with the fastest qualifying time, but could only come fourth in a race where the top six men were all separated by less than a second.
Fraser-Holmes battled with Renwick's teammate Dave Carry over the first 100m while defending champion from Melbourne Ross Davenport came back strongly to lead going into the home straight.
But Renwick surged ahead in the last 25m to win Scotland's second swimming medal in New Delhi. Carry lost his 400m freestyle crown on Monday and picked up bronze.
Monk's performance overturned the result in the recent Pan Pacifics, when he came fifth behind Fraser-Holmes, who is the fastest Australian at the distance this year.
