Shooters Narang, Omkar and Anisa win three Gold medals

New Delhi: After winning two Gold medals on Tuesday, Indian shooters led by Gagan Narang bagged three Gold medals on the third day of the Commonwealth Games.

Defending champion Gagan Narang on Wednesday pipped compatriot and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra to the individual gold medal in 10m air rifle event after having struck gold in the pairs event on Tuesday.

Second Gold was won by Anisa Sayyed in the individual 25m pistol event. Her Silver medal winning partner from yesterday, Rahi Sarnobat won Silver in the same event. Anisa scored 786.8 while Rani scored 781.

Third Gold medal was won by Omkar Singh in the 50 m Pistol event.

Continuing their fairytale run, Indian shooting pair of Ronjan Sodhi and Asher Noria claimed the silver in double trap pairs event at the Dr Karni Singh Range.

Narang equalled his own world record score of perfect 600 in the qualifiers before clinching the title with a total score of 703.6, which also bettered his own world mark of 703.5 set in the ISSF World Cup final in Bangkok two years ago.

Beijing Olympic gold medallist, Bindra shot a total 698.0, including 595 in the qualifiers to bag the silver. The bronze went to Englishman, James Huckle (693.5).

Narang, for whom winning medals has become a habit of sorts, started the day on a high note and hit the X- mark on the electronic gadget on all occasions in the qualifiers.

Bindra, on the other hand, fumbled at the start before settling down into a nice rhythm to finish second best.

The final turned out to be a cracker of a contest as both the Indian shooters tried to upstage the other, with Huckle being the only foreigner worthy of giving the Indians some competition. The Englishman eventually finished third.

After their exploits in the pairs event, both the shooters -- who know how to tackle the tension and perform on big stage -- appeared in good form from the word go and that added to the excitement.

Up against the Beijing Olympic gold medalist who is showing signs of returning to peak form following a long sabbatical and some none-too-impressive performances, including his 25th place finish in the world championship in Munich, Narang held his own to come out triumphant.

The Indian duo had bagged the gold medal in the pairs event yesterday, by shooting a total 1,193 points, breaking their own championship record of 1,189 set at Melbourne four years ago.

In the double trap event Sodhi and Noria shot 188, just one point behind gold medallists Steven Walton and Steven Scott from England. Malaysia's Benjamin Chen Jie Khor and Chye Chen Khor bagged the bronze after they totalled 185.

India will look to consolidate their second position in the medals tally on Day 3 of the Commonwealth Games as 28 gold medals are up for grabs today.
