New Delhi:
Suresh Kalmadi was once again surrounded by cameras on Saturday, but this time around the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) chief was out conducting a tour of the Games Village for the heads of missions of Commonwealth nations and the media.
Several countries had written to the OC complaining that rooms for players were dirty and had even brought in their own cleaners. On Saturday there was visible evidence that things were shaping up.
The condition of the toilets had come in for attack, and now it seems that they have finally been cleaned. When NDTV toured the area, a small army of cleaners were working to clean toilets in the Village.
"We got the flats late and that is why there was a little delay," said Kalmadi.
While more than 8000 players and athletes are expected to arrive for the Games, the majority of them are to stay in the luxury flats at the Games Village. The British squad however is currently staying in three hotels in the Capital, while some others say that they will move in once they are convinced with cleanliness.
"The rooms are very nice and so too are the other facilities including the food court, which is very good," said a Table Tennis player.
There are just seven days left for the start of the Games, and while concerns over hygiene has delayed the handing over of rooms to players, most teams now want to focus on gearing up for the competition which will be held over 11 days in New Delhi.
