Sudhir Kumar wins bronze in 77kg weightlifting
New Delhi: India's Sudhir Kumar lifted a total of 297 kgs to finish with a bronze medal in the men's 77kg weightlifting event.

Pint-sized Yukio Peter gave the tiny Pacific island of Nauru their first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday in the same event.

The 26-year-old lifted a Games record of 333kg to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Stephens, the current president of the tiny republic, who collected Commonwealth titles in 1994 and 1998.

Peter, standing at just 1.6m, had plenty to prove having flopped in Melbourne four years ago when he cramped in his first attempt in the snatch and crashed out.

He was second on body weight after the snatch on Thursday having lifted 148kg, the same as the lighter Nigerian Felix Ekpo.

But he ran away with the clean and jerk, lifting 185kg for a total of 333kg, 15kg more than silver medallist Ben Turner of Australia, who finished on 308kg with India's Sudhir Kumar taking bronze on 297kg.

It was Kumar's third successive Commonwealth Games bronze medal.

The clean and jerk proved a disaster for Ekpo who was on course for a medal but paid a heavy price for over-estimating his abilities by failing three times on 185kg which left him without a total.
