On December 31, 2019, China's Wuhan reported the first case of the novel coronavirus which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The coronavirus or COVID-19 which has spread its wings to 200 countries or areas has infected over sixty seven (67,69,38,430) individuals and claimed (68,84,572) lives. India, the second-most populous country of the world reported the first case of the infectious disease on January 30, 2020. Since then, the total number of active cases in the country has climbed up to 45019214 including foreign nationals. While 44481893 individuals infected with the coronavirus have been cured and discharged 533402 causalities have been reported.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, currently, India is in stage two of transmission, where the virus infects people directly in contact with affected patients who returned from abroad. But experts believe that we might already be in stage three which is called community transmission. Under stage three, the virus transmits into the local population which has no travel history or had contact with anyone who travelled abroad and as such, the chain of transmission becomes impossible to trace.

From issuing health advisory, putting cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, under a lockdown, to introducing curfew in Punjab, the state and central government is leaving no stone unturned to contain the spread of COVID-19. With myths and doubts spreading as fast as COVID-19 itself, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) has introduced a central helpline number to answer queries. There are states and union territory-specific helpline numbers as well where an individual can call to resolve his/her doubts. The helpline numbers can also be used to report symptoms, travel history, and in turn, seek medical guidance and precautionary measures to be followed. The MoH&FW has also put out the list of state and union territory-specific testing centers that involves both hospitals and laboratories.
