New Delhi:
A man sleeping on a pavement in Delhi was killed and three were injured early this morning after being hit by a speeding car driven by a class 12 student of Delhi Public School or DPS. The driver, Samarth Chugh, who turned 18 last month, has been arrested and sent to police custody till May 4. He was allegedly driving without a licence.
The accident took place around 5.30 am at ISBT, a busy bus terminal in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate. The police say Samarth and his two friends, all from DPS Mathura Road, were out celebrating after finishing class 12 board exams.
Police say there were four teenagers in an i20 car, all from a prominent Delhi school
Witnesses say the car, a Hyundai i20, was being driven at a very high speed; the teenager lost control while negotiating a turn and drove on a pavement where several homeless people were sleeping.
The man who died was 27.
Samarth's friends ran away but later turned themselves in. The teens have told the police that they had taken the car for a ride after a group study session and were on their way to school.
"They were driving recklessly. After investigation we got to know that the one driving the car does not have a license," said police officer Jatin Narwal.
Samarth has been charged with homicide not amounting to murder, for which the maximum punishment is a life term.
Samarth's father has claimed that he had no idea that his son had taken the car out.
"If it emerges that he allowed the car to be driven by someone without a driving licence, he too would be booked," Mr Narwal said.
