13 Cops Injured, Prohibitory Orders Imposed After Communal Tension in East Delhi's Trilokpuri

A heavy police contingent, along with the Rapid Action Force has been deployed in Trilokpuri.

New Delhi: A heavy police contingent, along with the Rapid Action Force, was deployed in east Delhi's Trilokpuri area after two groups clashed on the night of Diwali. Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 and around 60 people have been arrested today; 10 people were arrested over the clashes yesterday.

Residents have been fighting pitched battles by pelting stones on security personnel. At least 19 people have been injured, including 13 policemen, according to the police. Unofficial estimates, however, peg the number of injured at 35. A number of vehicles have also been vandalised in the area by hooligans and some shops have been set on fire.

"We have registered a case of rioting and other sections of IPC and 23 persons have been arrested so far. Combing operations are on and the situation is being monitored at the highest level," said a senior police official.

Many locals, along with their families, were seen leaving the locality in trucks and autos today. The area has been heavily barricaded and those seeking entry into the locality are being stopped and questioned by the security personnel.

It all started when some men, belonging to two communities, clashed on Diwali night. Things were brought under control by the police but clashes broke out again last night, after which police used tear gas shells and resorted to mild use of force to control the situation.

Senior police officials are camping in the area. There were reports of fresh stone pelting in the area today after which additional force for neighbouring districts have also been deployed in the area.
