New Delhi: The Delhi Police has arrested 142 people over a major security breach at Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's residence in New Delhi this afternoon.
Police says around 200 protesters had gathered outside Mr Shinde's residence this afternoon. They wanted to meet the Home Minister to demand reservation for the Jat community.
The protesters tried to storm into Mr Shinde's residence, 2-Krishna Menon Marg, but security personnel prevented them initially. However, some of them managed to open the gate by damaging it and reached the courtyard where they staged a sit in.
The protesters did not know that the Home Minister is currently in Russia.
The police booked the protesters for sections 147 (rioting), 157 (harboring persons hired for unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant) and 451 (trespassing) of the Indian Penal Code. All these charges are bailable.
13 policemen have also been suspended for dereliction of duty. A senior police official said action was taken against the personnel for dereliction of duty. "They could not anticipate and prevent the protesters from entering Home Minister's residence," he said.
