19 including five cops injured in West Delhi as roadside brawl spirals into clashes

People gathered in Tilak Vihar colony where clashes occured between two groups on Thursday

New Delhi: There is heavy police presence at a West Delhi colony on Friday after a roadside argument between two groups spiraled into clashes in which 19 people, including five cops were injured.

The police say the Tilak Vihar colony where the clashes erupted last evening is now calm, but forces have been posted to maintain peace.

Three people were reportedly injured by bullets but both the police have denied it. Some reports claimed that an unknown person had fired a gun, but there is no confirmation.

"It all started at 5.30 pm when a motorcycle rider knocked down a boy, who was flying a kite on the road. The two, belonging to different communities, started arguing," said a police official.

Soon people joined in from both sides and the argument escalated into stone pelting and even arson.

By the time the police arrived, the fighting groups had turned into mobs which even torched three police vehicles. The police used water cannon and tear gas shells to control the mob.

"Leaders of both communities have appealed for calm and both groups are cooperating, "said a police officer in the area.
