New Delhi: Three people have been detained in connection with a sensational multi-crore car robbery in broad daylight in south Delhi on Tuesday. The police say they are part of a gang based in Haryana.
The driver of the Honda City, which was stopped and looted by armed men, has also been detained. Cops say the man, an alleged bookie, had been raided earlier this week. They are looking for 10 more suspects.
The man who was robbed, businessman Rajesh Kalra, came under investigation after the police realized that close to 15 crore in cash may have been stolen, far more than 8 crore that he had claimed. The police say Mr Kalra was named as a conduit between South African skipper Hansie Cronje and a London based bookie in the 2000 match-fixing scandal.
The police suspect the stolen money was linked to payoffs in a betting racket and included euros and dollars.
Mr Kalra has claimed that the money was for a property deal that fell through, but the police are skeptical, given the businessman's past. He said he was driving his Honda City to his bank in Karol Bagh to deposit eight crore rupees when a silver Maruti Wagon R overtook him and forced him to stop.
He said a few men walked up to the Honda City, pointed a gun and snatched the money. They allegedly forced people out of the car and escaped in it.
About four and a half hours later, the cops found the hijacked Honda City. It had two empty bags in it, the cops said.
