39 fresh dengue cases push total to 1,200 in Delhi

Dengue cases in the capital rose to 1,200, with 39 more people testing positive for the mosquito-borne disease on Monday, official data revealed.

Of the new cases, 15 were reported from areas in North Delhi Municipal Corporation, 17 from South Delhi Municipal Corporation, five from the East Delhi Municipal Corporation and two from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the data showed.

Since dengue hit the national capital this year, South Delhi Municipal Corporation has reported 457 dengue cases -- the largest among all civic agencies in the capital.

Two children died of dengue in Delhi in the first week of October.

In 2011, a total of 849 dengue cases were reported in Delhi, down from a total of 5,649 cases in 2010.

Officials said the unusually high figure in 2010 followed much construction activity in the city in preparation of the Commonwealth Games, which caused stagnant pools of water and influx of labourers from neighbouring states.
