New Delhi: A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a housekeeping staff in one of the restrooms at a private school in south Delhi, the police said today. The 22-year-old man, who works as a sweeper at the school, has been arrested.
The incident took place at Sant Nirankari Public School in Malviya Nagar, according to news agency ANI. The girl had gone to the washroom and needed some help. When she called out for somebody, instead of a woman staff, the accused entered the toilet and allegedly sexually assaulted her, the police said.
The girl didn't inform her teachers or school staff and went home. When her parents probed, she told them about the alleged assault. They called the school authorities who informed the police.
A case was registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and other sections. The accused, a resident of Delhi's Dakshinpuri, was arrested.
The incident comes in the backdrop of heightened concern over the safety of children in schools. Last month, a seven-year-old boy was found with his throat slit in a washroom of Gurgaon's Ryan International School. His alleged killer, a bus conductor, had attempted sexual assault on him, the police had said.
A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a peon the same month inside a classroom in a school in Delhi's Shahdara. The 40-year-old accused was arrested. Around the same time, a six-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted by two cleaning staff at a prominent government school in Barmer district of Rajasthan.
After a series of similar incidents in and around the city, Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik instructed all district Deputy Commissioners to ensure that schools in their areas have adequate security measures.
