New Delhi:

The national capital reported 96 cases of COVID-19 with nine deaths in the last 24 hours, government data shows. Some 212 people also recovered in this duration.

This is the first time that Delhi, which has seen and surmounted three waves of coronavirus infections, logged less than 100 since April last year when India was still in first phase of the nationwide lockdown to control the pandemic.

On April 30, Delhi had recorded 76 new cases.

Though the low case count came on the back of about 30,000 tests -- less than half of the usual testing -- on Republic Day, its overall positivity rate has also been on a decline in the recent weeks.

The city's positivity rate, which had shot to about 15 per cent at the peak of its third wave of infections throwing up about 8,500 cases in a day, now stands at 0.32 per cent.

There are 6,34,325 total cases of coronavirus in Delhi. Of these, 6.2 lakh have fought off the highly infectious disease taking the overall recovery rate to 98 per cent.

The total Covid-related fatalities stand at10,829 with a death rate of 1.7 per cent. Active cases in the city-state have slipped to 1,501, data shows.

The improvement in situation is also reflected in the number of empty beds in Delhi's government and private hospitals. Seven government-run hospitals and all private hospitals were recently allowed to reduce the number reserved beds for Covid patients.

The record dip in Delhi's Covid infections comes amid a similar national trend of cases being at their lowest in almost seven months amid what the government claims is world's largest vaccination drive.
