A Heart Transported Through Delhi's Green Corridor Saves a 13-Year-Old's Life

The live heart was transported from Gurgaon to Delhi within 40 minutes.

New Delhi: Timely coordination among all stakeholders helped create a green corridor on the stretch between Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon and AIIMS, New Delhi, facilitating transportation of a live cadaveric heart a distance of 22 kms in just about 39 minutes.

The organ retrieved from a 34-year-old road accident victim was transplanted in a 13-year-old boy, who was battling for survival.

The cardiac transplant team from AIIMS reached Fortis Hospital at 6 am and the heart was harvested at 9.15 am. The ambulance left the premises at 9.17 AM to reach AIIMS crossing MG Road, Chattarpur, IIT and Green Park in the next 38 minutes, 55 seconds.

The 34-year-old man was brought to FMRI on Tuesday night after he had met with a road accident on the Alwar Bypass road in Bhiwadi earlier that evening. The patient had received fatal injuries on his head. Despite relentless efforts by the neurosurgery team, the patient could not be revived and showed signs of brain death by early Thursday evening, said the FMRI authorities.

The family was counselled and they agreed to donate the heart, liver and both the kidneys. While the heart went to AIIMS, the liver was transplanted into a 40 year-old man. One kidney was transplanted to save the life of a 31-year-old woman while the second kidney was transplanted into a 47-year-old man. The liver and both kidneys were transplanted at FMRI itself.
