The Aam Aadmi Party has suspended its lawmaker Devinder Sehrawat days after he wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleging there are leaders in the party in Punjab that are exploiting women in return for tickets.
The action comes after Mr Kejriwal returned to Delhi today, wrapping up his four-day visit to poll-bound Punjab. The decision to suspend Mr Sehrawat was taken by the disciplinary committee of AAP's Delhi unit.
"Sehrawat has been suspended by the disciplinary committee till pending enquiry," AAP's Delhi unit convenor Dilip Pandey said.
Responding to the party's decision to suspend him, Mr Sehrawat tweeted, "Repeated Reports of Molestation of women and sexual abuse,Ring Master Kejriwal obliging his lecherous cotrie & adding more such candidates (sic)."
In another tweet, earlier in the day he had dared the party to expel him.
"If you have the courage, severe the ties and expel. With 67 MLAs you could not perform, You don't have it in you- So Get out of the Way....(sic)," he had said.
Mr Sehrawat had written to Mr Kejriwal at a time when AAP is dealing with an embarrassing sex scandal that led to the sacking of minister Sandeep Kumar.
"I saw disturbing reports about women being exploited in Punjab in return of promise of tickets. I am meeting people in Chandigarh to check the position on ground... Dilip Pandey is doing same in Delhi," Mr Sehrawat had alleged in his letter to the Chief Minister.
"If someone exploits women for tickets then nothing can be more wrong. If the leadership is not doing anything then somewhere they are also involved. It is not acceptable that four people will rule the country and the party," Mr Sehrawat had written, adding, "I appeal to Kejriwal to clear the stand of the party. If someone does this kind of activity then he should be removed from the party."
Mr Sehrawat had also criticised party leader Ashutosh for his views on the sex tape allegedly featuring Sandeep Kumar who has also been booked on rape charges.
In a blog on ndtv.com, Ashutosh had referenced Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru while speaking about examples in history where leaders had lived with "desires beyond social boundaries" and questioned why sex between two consenting adults should be debated.
