Delhi government has announced that private vehicles with odd and even registration numbers will be allowed on the roads only on alternate days starting January.
The measures announced by Delhi Government to tackle rising air pollution in the national capital have evoked a positive response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled municipal corporations although they have expressed reservations over the decision to shut down some parkings for traffic obstructions.
The South Delhi Mayor Subhash Arya said that growing pollution is every one's concern and the municipal corporations will only extend their help without causing any hindrance in implementation of the decisions.
He, however, said "if the Delhi Government shuts down any parking lot it should compensate the revenue loss or provide alternative parking facility."
The measures announced by the government included shutting down Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) parking lots on the roads that are responsible for slowing down traffic movement.
Many parking areas in East Delhi Municipal Corporation were closed down after National Green Tribunal order. Now, if the government decides to close any other parkings then it should also provide "alternative solution", East Delhi Mayor Harsh Deep Malhotra said.
Developing greenery on the central verge of roads and uncovered roadsides to check dust pollution has also been decided by the government which was welcomed by the Mayors.
"There is division of work and responsibilities of agencies are specified. All the roads wider than 60 feet are maintained by PWD they are responsible for its upkeep," Mr Malhotra said.
With regard to government decision about modifying the recently launched Swachh Delhi app and use it for receiving complaints of burning of biomass and garbage, Mr Malhotra said that the government need to have the proper infrastructure in place to implement this decision.
"The app was launched to redress complaints of garbage and debris both. While municipal corporations have been lifting garbage under the Swachh Delhi campaign, the government agency responsible for clearing debris has failed to do so," he added.
