AAP leader Sanjay Singh was slapped by a woman party worker on Sunday
New Delhi:
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was slapped by a woman party worker who said she was upset about not being allowed to raise alleged corruption in choice of candidates for the civic polls.
Simran Bedi, a party volunteer from the Rajouri Garden Assembly constituency, said she slapped Mr Singh as he had refused to listen to her complaints.
Ms Bedi is reportedly an aspirant for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections and was asked for money. Mr Singh was on a road show on Sunday, campaigning for the Rajouri Garden Assembly by-poll, when he was attacked.
"I slapped Sanjay Singh as all my attempts to raise the issue of corruption in the party went unheard. I tried meeting the top brass including Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh, but no one was willing to listen to me," said Ms Bedi.
She alleges that a video of AAP leaders asking for bribe for a poll ticket was dismissed by the party's leadership.
AAP's Delhi unit convener Dilip Pandey said, "The incident was shameful and we condemn it strongly. No amount of verbal or physical assault shall stop AAP's road to victory in the Rajouri Garden by-poll."
The police said it received a call from AAP legislator Jarnail Singh saying Mr Singh was assaulted by a woman. "We have not received any written complaint from Sanjay Singh yet. We are inquiring into the matter," said a police officer.
AAP has accused rival parties for the attack. "Opposition parties and forces opposed to Aam Aadmi Party knew that stature and popularity of the leaders made this roadshow a big event and to mar that, our leader and spokesperson, Sanjay Singh, was assaulted," Mr Pandey alleged.
By-polls will be held next Sunday for the Rajouri Garden assembly seat after lawmaker Jarnail Singh resigned to contest the Punjab polls.
