The Aam Aadmi Party's campaign song released on Wednesday suggests that the party is likely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with the agenda of full statehood to Delhi. The song, written by party leader Dilip Pandey, talks about the "right to full statehood". The song will be played in all the functions related to polls. The song also touches upon other issues raised by the party, including women's safety, jobs and housing for poor.
Since forming the government in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal and his party have been at loggerheads with the centre, alleging interference in administration. The party had a pitched battle with former Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and then the current L-G Anil Baijal over a host of issues.
The centre and the Delhi government have also fought a battle in the court. Last month, the Supreme Court said that it is the centre and not the Delhi government that has the powers to order investigations against corrupt officers in the capital. Mr Kejriwal called the ruling "injustice to the people of Delhi".
Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said on Wednesday that many issues were under neglect as the government's "hands are tied" as Delhi was not a full state.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party was vying for an alliance with the Congress in the national capital. But the talks went south. Congress president Rahul Gandhi, after a meeting with several opposition leaders, including Mr Kejriwal, said that his party will go solo in Lok Sabha polls in Delhi.
Arvind Kejriwal has slammed the Congress after the party took a formal decision to not ally with his party. The Congress was "helping the BJP", he tweeted minutes after Sheila Dikshit said it was an "unanimous decision" by the state Congress, which had been accepted by party chief Rahul Gandhi.
The AAP, meanwhile, has announced candidates in Delhi for six out of seven Lok Sabha seats for polls, which are due by May. The party will field Atishi from East Delhi, Raghav Chaddha from South Delhi, Pankaj Gupta from Chandni Chowk, Dilip Pandey from North East Delhi, Gugan Singh from North West Delhi and Brajesh Goel from the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat. The six candidates were earlier appointed as in charge on the respective Lok Sabha seats.
