New Delhi:
Continuing its drive against jaywalkers, Delhi Police on Saturday fined 154 people, taking the total number of those prosecuted in the past three days to 582. They were slapped a fine of Rs 50 each.
According to a message posted by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg on traffic police's Facebook page, which has close to 95,000 followers, police started the drive Thursday at six spots in the city.
"On the first day (Thursday), we fined 233 jaywalkers, yesterday (Friday) 195 and today (Saturday) 154. We have selected six places in the capital where good FOBs (foot over-bridges) exist," Garg told IANS.
"We will continue education, encouragement and of course prosecution. Let people understand if anybody meets with accident it IS NATIONAL LOSS," he posted on Facebook.
According to police, the six selected spots are - Income Tax Office in central Delhi, Kashmere Gate bus terminus in north Delhi, Anand Vihar in east Delhi, Rajouri Garden in west Delhi, Africa Avenue and Bhogal in south Delhi - where high number of pedestrian accidents were reported despite FOBs.
Garg said he was saddened to see that even where there were good facilities available, people refused to use them.
"The other day we started a scheme to motivate people to use FOBs by giving lucky coupons with cash awards of Rs 5,000. Now we have started prosecuting jaywalkers," said Garg.
"Fine for jay walking is just Rs.50. But what is important is creation of safety consciousness. I know many people resist challans and instead want to compromise their safety," he added.
