Arvind Kejriwal swearing-in as Delhi Chief Minister in Ramlila Maidan
New Delhi: Among the thousands of exultant supporters who have reached the Ramlila grounds to watch Arvind Kejriwal take oath as chief minister of Delhi is a man who calls himself "Touch Baba."
He claims that Mr Kejriwal, who has been running a high fever for some days now, will feel instantly better once he has touched him.
There is more such touching support at the sprawling public park for the 46-year-old taxman-turned-activist-turned-politician who describes himself as the "Janta ka CM (CM of the people)."
One supporter has fashioned a broom, the Aam Aadmi Party's election symbol into a gun and has called it AK- 67. That combines with Mr Kejriwal's initials and the number of seats his party has won in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, in a massive win that saw the two-year-old party crush the BJP and wipe out the Congress in the Delhi elections this week.
"This broom is our strength. We will clean up Delhi with this," the supporter told NDTV, reposing full faith in the new young AAP team that has been voted to power by Delhi.
There are people at the Ramlila grounds today who have brought little children dressed as Arvind Kejriwal, complete with mufflers and moustaches painted on their faces. There is even a "Mahatma Gandhi" in the crowds.
Stark in the colour of the carnival atmosphere at the Ramlila is the VIP enclosure, with rows of empty chairs draped in white. AAP has said this area was put up at the behest of Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's office for guests from the central government.
AAP has said its
legislators and leaders will not use the VIP enclosure.
It was on February 14 last year that Arvind Kejriwal resigned after a tumultuous 49 days in office after the Congress and BJP blocked his anti-corruption Bill in the Delhi Assembly. Exactly a year later, the sweet strains of the shehnai filled the air as he arrived to take oath as chief minister.
