New Delhi: A 20-year-old woman studying at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was molested and slapped outside her hostel on Sunday, the police confirmed. The assault comes just days after a student walked into a classroom on campus and hit a girl on the head with an axe repeatedly. She is in hospital in critical condition.

The police said that the man involved in Sunday's attack was a former classmate of the girl he hit. The police identified him as Abhinendra Jain; he was been arrested.

Students said that he also tried to choke the woman he targeted, but the police denied that.

"Jain had told the girl to not to talk to other men. When she did not listen to him, Jain attacked and molested her in full public view," a police officer told new agency IANS.

Last week, a student carried an axe and a pistol into a classroom and asked a girl to walk out with him. When she refused, he hit her with the axe and drank poison. He died hours later; she has gone through a series of operations.
