New Delhi: A sculpture and pottery exhibition in Delhi reflects the skill and genius of Ray Meeker, one of India's most renowned ceramic artists, who along with his wife Deobrah transformed the traditional use of clay and pottery into a powerful movement of art.
On his 70th birthday, in another exhibition, his students - who are now well-known artists in their own right - pay a tribute to their master by reflecting his influences in their own works.
Deborah and Ray founded the Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry in 1971 and for the next 40 years the place became both an inspiration and point of instruction for generations of ceramic workers and artists. Though Mr Ray says, "We don't consider ourselves an art school. We consider ourselves simply to acquaint people with the material and the processes."
'Bridges,' an exhibition of works by over 50 of Ray Meeker's former students was held on his 70th birthday, in acknowledgement of the immense contribution by Ray and Deborah to the ceramic movement in India.
"I think a show like this showcasing 50 artists who are from the same Gharana is quite path breaking", says Amrita Dhawan, one of the first students at Golden Bridge Pottery.
