File photo: Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti in a verbal altercation with a Delhi Police official during a midnight raid in South Delhi
New Delhi:
On a day Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal started his protest, it was also the talking point in Khirki extension in South Delhi where his law minister Somnath Bharti tried to conduct raids alleging a drug and sex racket.
"It's good that Kejriwal is sitting on a dharna. Police knew what was happening here but didn't take any action," said Mr Saini, a resident of the locality.
"There is nothing wrong with him sitting on a protest," said another. But others do no share that view. "I don't think it makes any sense for him to sit on a protest for what's not under his jurisdiction. Why not focus on what is and what he can control and govern. People have voted for him so he can govern not sit on a protest," said Pankaja.
Mr Kejriwal is demanding the suspension of at least three SHOs including the one at Malviya Nagar police station. The Khirki village falls under this police station.
Almost a week after Mr Bharti's midnight raid, many locals still support what he did.
"What Somnath Bharti did is absolutely right. Earlier, we couldn't even walk on this road after dark. After Mr Bharti came, things have improved in the last few days," said Prakash.
But Prema Singh, another resident here didn't quite agree. "There is a change after the raid. But don't know how long it will last. And African nationals from here have probably gone into hiding because of fear," she said.
African nationals we spoke to didn't want to be identified, saying they were afraid of being singled out and targeted.
"I'm scared to step out. In the past also people have thrown stones and bottles at us," said a woman from Uganda. A student from Nigeria said, "I don't want to live like a hostage in my own home. But that's virtually what I'm doing."
Ms Singh added, "His intention may have been right, but his method certainly wasn't."
Some also say that a few African nationals have temporarily moved out of the area.
Meanwhile, away from the Chief Minister's protest and the demands for their suspension the police continue investigations on the controversial midnight raid.
