ATM van driver flees with Rs 49 lakh in Delhi

New Delhi: The driver of a van belonging to a cash-replenishment agency allegedly decamped with Rs 49 lakh while his colleagues were loading money in an ATM in Karol Bagh area of Central Delhi on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident took place around 11 am when the cash van reached an Axis Bank ATM at Fateh Singh road with driver Sanjay and three other employees Amit Mishra, Kapil and FD Sharma in it.

The guard and one cash loader took a box containing Rs 29 lakh to load in the ATM while the remaining was locked in a steel box with Sanjay and other man still inside the vehicle.

While the duo was busy loading cash in the ATM, Sanjay asked the third person to alight from the vehicle on some pretext. When he got down, Sanjay fled away with the vehicle along with the money, police said.

"We later recovered the vehicle from Raigarpura area. The lock of the steel box was broken and the cash missing. Raids are being conducted to nab the driver," said a police official.

During investigation, police found that Sanjay had joined CMS company on August 31. The local address of Harkesh Nagar which he had provided while joining the company, was also found fake during the investigation.

A statement issued by CMS company said, "Rupees 49 lakh were stolen from one of our cash transport vehicles in New Delhi. Police investigations are currently underway, and we are supporting the investigation."

A case under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of IPC has been registered at Karol Bagh police station. The van, the guard, the cash loader and the driver were provided by Cash Management Services (CMS) Company, police said.

The guard and the cash loaders are also being questioned to ascertain whether they were in anyway involved in the incident and deliberately allowed him to flee with the cash, a senior police official said.

Later in the day, Axis Bank issued a clarification that neither the cash van nor the driver belonged to them and the FIR too was filed by the cash replenishment agency - CMS.
