New Delhi:
Baby Falak, the two-year-old girl fighting a valiant battle for life after being brought battered and bruised to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) two weeks ago, is again off the ventilator.
Doctors said Falak was taken off ventilator support at six am today. She is still in coma, but the septicemia or infection of the blood that she had developed from brain and chest infection, is now responding to medication, doctors said. The baby might be operated upon next week if she continues to be in stable condition for the next few days and her culture reports are good. She had brain surgery last week and doctors said fluid had now stopped circulating in her brain.
A doctor attending to Falak said yesterday, "We are monitoring her vital organs and administering strong antibiotics to stop spreading the infection to other parts. She is moving her eyes, arms and legs slightly. But she is in a deeply unconscious state."
Baby Falak was brought to AIIMS on January 18 with severe head injuries, fractures and human bite marks all over her. The 15-year-old girl who brought her to hospital is now in a juvenile home. Doctors at AIIMS said that the minor girl had initially said she was the baby's mother and that the two-year-old had been injured from falling off her bed. The child's bruises did not match the minor's story and the doctors called the police.
Delhi Police teams have fanned out across states to piece together the horrifying puzzle of how Baby Falak came to be battered almost to death. The minor girl has been questioned leading to the arrest of four people. But the police are yet to find the main accused, Rajkumar, who the girl now allegedly says gave her the baby. They have also not been able to trace Falak's biological mother yet.
