Ban basements near Yamuna to stop building collapses, says MCD

Delhi: With water accumulation in the basement suspected to be the reason for the east Delhi house collapse that killed 70 people, the MCD feels basements should be banned in all buildings along or near the Yamuna river to prevent recurrence of such mishaps.

"There should be no basements in houses near or along the Yamuna as flood water accumulation makes them vulnerable. After we get the probe report on the Lalita Park incident, we may move for banning basements in such areas," MCD Standing Committee Chairman Yogender Chadolia said.

The building in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar that collapsed last Monday had flood water accumulated at the basement which might have weakened the foundation.

"A large number of buildings in such areas have the same problem of flood water accumulation. They use pumps to bring the water out but as sewer lines are blocked, this does not prove to be very helpful," Chandolia said.

The MCD said during the ongoing survey being undertaken by it, the height of buildings in approved, unauthorised and unauthorised regularised residential colonies will be checked.

In many areas, structures of more than 15 m in height are not allowed according to Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) and buildings which have been constructed violating this norm may face action. Chandolia said illegal floors in such buildings "may be demolished" too.

The Lalita Park building had two illegal floors.
