New Delhi:
From the fourth floor of a huge bank in Delhi, women trapped inside a bank on fire climbed onto the ledges of windows. Fire-fighters stationed there helped them onto ladders and cranes that brought them to safety.
The fire began shortly before 5 pm at the headquarters of the Punjab National Bank, less than half a kilometre from the Indian parliament.
25 fire engines are parked at the building. Adjoining offices have been evacuated.
No casualties have been reported yet.
The fire began at about 4.30 pm when the bank was filled with employees.
A man who was inside said he jumped onto the terrace of a building next door, along with his colleagues, to escape the flames. He said an alarm did sound through the building when the fire began.
