BJP activists protesting outside Chief Minster Arvind Kejriwal's house in New Delhi.
New Delhi: Some 250 BJP activists today protested outside the home of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that his government was shielding the men who beat a 38-year-old father of two to death on Sunday in an alleged case of road rage.
The police used water cannons and batons to disperse the protesters, who stormed police barricades and climbed on cars while raising slogans against Mr Kejriwal and the AAP government.
"The BJP called us Naxals for protesting on the streets, now what does the Prime Minister say to his Delhi unit for doing just that?'' said Kumar Vishwas, senior AAP leader, at a press conference later today.
He said the BJP "has made certain the Delhi police should be brought under the Delhi government."
The BJP demanded the resignation of Delhi Minister Asim Mohammad Khan, who is the AAP lawmaker of the area where the incident took place. Mr Khan had "pressured" the police to file a "weak" FIR or police complaint, said Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyaya.
On Thursday, Shahnawaz's family met Mr Kejriwal and sought a speedy trial. The Chief Minister assured the victim's family of all help and asked Asim Khan to submit a report.
Shahnawaz was headed home from a family wedding on Sunday night when his motorcycle grazed a car near Delhi's famous Turkman Gate. For 15 minutes, Shahnawaz was beaten with iron rods by five men who were in the car, according to his young sons who were with him. Three people have been arrested.
