BJP Protests Outside Arvind Kejriwal's House, Demands Sacking of Delhi Law Minister for Allegedly Forging His Degree

The BJP in Delhi is demanding state law minister Jitender Singh Tomar's dismissal from the government.

New Delhi: The BJP in Delhi today held a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence, demanding dismissal of Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who is facing charges of forging a law degree.

The protestors led by Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay took to streets holding placards and shouting slogans against AAP.

"The manner in which a Minister of the Delhi Government is sitting with a fake degree, we have no option but to come out on the roads in this heat. We will not stop the agitation till Tomar is dismissed. This kind of anarchy cannot go on," said Satish Upadhyay.

He also said that the BJP is even exploring the possibility of filing a police complaint against the minister.

Mr Tomar rejected the opposition's calls for his resignation. "A fabricated case based on lies cannot be a reason to resign. My degree is 100 per cent genuine, I have all documents to prove it," he had said.

On Monday, a Bihar university had filed an inquiry report in the Delhi High Court stating that Mr Tomar's provisional certificate is "fabricated and doesn't exist in the university's record." It also said that the serial number on Mr Tomar's purported certificate threw up a "different person's name from a different stream."

The university has alleged that its records have been tampered with. The court, acting on a petition that says Mr Tomar used a "false and bogus" degree to become an advocate, has asked the minister to respond by August 20.

Mr Tomar, 48, is a first time minister. He has faced questions over his educational qualifications since the day he was named part of Arvind Kejriwal's lean team.

He has also been asked by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to explain allegations that he faked his law degree.

A court had earlier asked an Uttar Pradesh college, to confirm Mr Tomar's graduation degree in science, after similar allegations.

Jitender Singh Tomar is the second law minister to embarrass AAP.

AAP's previous law minister Somnath Bharti was excoriated last year for his ill-advised midnight raid at a south Delhi colony that targeted Nigerian women.
