Om Prakash Sharma, Vijender Gupta and Jagdish Pradhan are the three BJP lawmakers in the new Delhi assembly
New Delhi: The BJP today chose a leader out of its three lawmakers in the Delhi assembly and gave their hopelessly outnumbered state a new descriptor. "They are our Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh," quipped the party's Prabhat Jha.
The BJP's top leaders in Delhi met to decide which one of the three legislators would be named leader of the party in the state assembly.
Till about a week ago, such meetings were focused on how to win the election and form the government in the capital.
But Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the election so decisively that even they were stunned. They acquired 67 of the 70 seats in Delhi, leaving three for the BJP and none for the Congress.
After winning the election, AAP said it was willing to offer the post of Leader of the Opposition to the BJP, though to claim that office, a party is required to have at least 10% of the members of the assembly.
"We accept the challenge. We will play the role of a constructive opposition," said Vijender Gupta, who was elected from Rohini in West Delhi, one of the places where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting.
Mr Gupta has in the past served as the president of the BJP's Delhi branch.
The newly elected Delhi assembly will begin its first session on Monday.
Mr Kejriwal has already asked officials to propose how they will provide cheaper electricity and water, a promise he made in his campaign.
