New Delhi: A three-year-old boy was killed after being run over by a bus in a village in the Narela area, on the outskirts of Delhi, on Thursday morning.
The child's death drew angry protests from the locals who blocked a road and pelted police vehicles with stones leading to a cane charge and police firing. A 20-year-old peanut seller was killed in the firing. The incidents occurred in the Metronagar locality of Haulambi Kalan village.
The boy, named Aditya, was walking up to a shop near his home when a private bus ran him over, Ravi, a resident of the area, said. The residents of the area protested after the police arrived. They claimed the police, instead of arresting the driver, heckled locals who had caught and detained him.
There was an altercation between the police and the residents who then blocked a road and a railway line in the area, they added.
The police first fired tear gas shells and then bullets to clear the blockades. Wasim, 20, was shot in the firing and later died in hospital, sources said. The protesters also set police vehicles on fire.
Additional police forces were rushed to control the angry mob. By afternoon, the situation had been brought under control.
