A woman was allegedly murdered by her elder brother in northwest Delhi's Outram Lane area.
New Delhi:
A 28-year-old woman was murdered allegedly by her older brother in Delhi on the weekend in what police suspect was an attempted sexual assault. He has been arrested.
Two days after they celebrated the Raksha Bandhan festival, the man allegedly shoved a rolling pin into his sister's mouth and used his foot to choke her.
His sister's 10-year-old son is believed to have been present at the time but it is not clear whether he witnessed the crime.
After the murder, the police say, the man took his nephew to his room and made him sleep there while he slept beside his sister's body, because he "regretted what he had done".
The police say the man was drunk when he reached his house in Outram Lane in northwest Delhi around 1 am on Saturday and kicked the door of his sister's room open.
It is suspected that he attacked her and tried to rape her but she fought back. He killed her in a fit of rage, said senior police officer Vijay Singh.
The woman had been staying with her brother since she separated from her husband two years ago.
Even the man had a strained relationship with his wife, who was staying with her brother, the officer said.
The accused man was known for his temper. His nephew has told the police that his mother had been brutally beaten by him in the past.
On Saturday, the woman had moved to a room on the first floor with her son, which apparently enraged her brother. He went out for drinks with his brother-in-law and later came back to his sister's room.
A neighbour called the police in the morning and the man was arrested. "We are investigating the motive behind the murder," Mr Singh said.
