Caught On Camera: Tihar Jailors In Drunken Brawl

The two men, a warder and a head warder, have been suspended

New Delhi: In a car parked in west Delhi's Jankpuri, not far from Tihar Jail where they work, two drunk jailors rained blows on one another. The scuffle was captured on video by passers and has since gone viral.

The two men, a warder and a head warder, have been suspended while an enquiry is conducted into the incident by an embarrassed Tihar, Asia's biggest jail.

"We have taken serious note of the video and are ensuring strict action against the two jail staffers, head warder Anil Upreti and warder Digambar over their drunken brawl. Such an act is unbecoming of government servants and process is under way to suspend them," said Mukesh Prasad, a senior Tihar Jail officer.

Upreti and Digambar had parked the car and were drinking in it on the night of February 1 when they fought. Drawn by the commotion, people gathered around the vehicle and called the police while some captured the brawl on video.

Upreti is posted in Tihar's CCTV room, while Digambar looks after security at Jail number 7 of the prison. A jail warder is the equivalent of a constable in the police.

Last month, an under-trial was killed in a police van of the jail after a fight between two inmates.

In December, a 25-year-old inmate died after alleged "drug overdose." His family said his body bore injury marks.
