Columbian arrested for burglaries in Delhi

Delhi: A young Columbian national was arrested in Delhi for allegedly burgling two houses with the help of three other foreigners, including a woman, as police today said criminal elements were coming to India on tourist visas and committing crime.

Edier Jaidiber (31), hailing from Columbian capital of Bogota, was apprehended from Saket yesterday after he was found moving suspiciously with a bag containing ornaments and house breaking equipment, H G S Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said.

The arrest led police to a unique way adopted by foreigners in committing crime here.

"Criminals from abroad are coming with the preparation of committing crime on three months tourist visa and stay in hotels and commit crime in posh areas with the help of other foreigners. It has also come to notice that the Jaidiber's gang had studied the penal law of India," Dhaliwal said.

Jaidiber and his three friends -- Edisson Maurieio, Carlos Alfanso and Monica Yulietch -- had allegedly burgled two houses in Saket on March 13 and yesterday. Look-Out notices for the three others, who are absconding, have been issued.

Rs 1.56 lakh cash, jewellery of gold and silver worth around Rs 15 lakh and house breaking equipment imported from abroad have so far been recovered. The house breaking equipment is of very refined quality and any lock can be broken within a minute with the help of these.

According to police, the gang had on March 13 burgled the house of Heena Dass, a senior citizen residing in Saket.

Two days later, the house of one Narender Mohan Sharma was also burgled.

During investigations in the locality, it came to light that a few persons, including a girl with Mangolian physical features, were seen roaming around the area suspiciously.

"The team laid traps in the area and also raided some hideouts in Saidulajab area. Yesterday, police intercepted a person under suspicious circumstances who was carrying bags.

"On checking of bags some ornaments and implements of house breaking were recovered. He was could not show either his identity or any valid documents for stay in India. He disclosed himself as Colombian national and disclosed that his other associates were also roaming nearby," Dhaliwal said.

Jaidiber told police that he came to India on March ten on a three months tourist visa along with his three friends. He lost his passport somewhere in Delhi but did not lodge any police report.

"They checked in hotel Livasa Inn in Karol Bagh but later changed the hotel and shifted to Travel Venture Indian Pvt Ltd in the same locality and remained there till yesterday.

"After committing the burglary yesterday, the gang was looking for a hotel when one of them landed in police net," Dhaliwal said.
