Delhi cop Salim PK, wrongly branded drunk after this video went viral, has lost his Supreme Court case.
New Delhi:
A constable in Delhi, the subject of a video that went viral last year, will not be paid damages by either the media or the government for being wrongly labeled as drunk on duty, the Supreme Court ruled today.
Judges said that Salim PK, who was suspended on the basis of the video, has got his job back, and there has been no violation of his fundamental rights.
Salim, who was filmed in uniform on a cellphone as he fell in the Delhi metro, was described as drunk by news channels including NDTV in August. However, he then informed his bosses that he has a medical condition, the after-effects of a stroke he suffered a few years ago, and that's why he collapsed after swaying in an underground coach.
He also says that he had stopped taking his medicines which contributed to his collapse.
Salim, who is from Kerala, wanted the Supreme Court to order the media to issue a correction to help him "recover his lost dignity," his lawyer said, but the judges have not sanctioned that.
Salim joined the Delhi police in 1986.
