New Delhi: A Delhi court today took cognisance on the chargesheet against a man for alleged brutal killing of a 21-year-old woman by stabbing her 22 times on a busy road here in broad daylight last month.
Metropolitan Magistrate Rashmi Gupta, after taking cognisance on the chargesheet, put up the matter for October 19 for committing the case to a sessions court as the punishment for the alleged offence is more than seven years.
The court had earlier supplied the copy of charge sheet to 34-year-old accused Surender Singh, who is currently in judicial custody, for the offence of murder under section 302 of IPC.
The savage murder, which was captured in CCTV camera, took place on September 20 when Karuna Kumar, a teacher in a North Delhi school, was going for work, police had said, adding that Surender Singh had been stalking her for over 18 months.
Police said Karuna Kumar, along with her cousin Neha, was on her way to work when Surender Singh attacked her with a pair of scissors near Labour Chowk in Burari.
As Surender Singh caught Karuna Kumar off guard and stabbed her with a single blade of the scissor, a man rushed to stop him but soon backed off fearing he would be attacked.
Within about three minutes, Surender Singh had stabbed Karuna Kumar 22 times, as onlookers kept away, it said. Neha told the police that she was also threatened by Surender Singh forcing her to back off, but she kept shouting for help.
The victim was taken to a trauma centre in Civil Lines where she was declared brought dead. The accused was beaten up by the locals and handed him over to the police. He was arrested and a case of murder was lodged.
Surender Singh, son of a retired Delhi Police sub-inspector, is going through divorce proceedings and has two kids.
