New Delhi: A court in New Delhi today reserved its order on the bail plea of Delhi's former Law Minister Somnath Bharti, accused in a domestic violence case filed against him by his wife.

Additional Sessions Judge Anil Kumar set October 7 to deliver his order on Mr Bharti's plea.

Mr Bharti's counsel Vijay Aggarwal told court that his client, being the lawmaker of the Malviya Nagar assembly seat, has to overlook work in his constituency. As he is in languishing in jail, the work in his constituency is being affected, he added.

He also said that his client will accept every condition imposed by the court.

Mr Bharti also claimed that he will prove himself innocence by exhibiting recorded conversation between him and his wife.

He called the matter against him as a "BJP-sponsored litigation" and said that it was a case of an "on-and-off relationship".

Delhi Police strongly opposed the bail plea, contending Mr Bharti is an influential person and he will hamper the investigation.

Special Public Prosecutor Shailendra Babbar also said that Mr Bharti has misused the process of law.

Mr Bharti, who surrendered to police on last Monday evening and was arrested, was named in an FIR filed on September 10 following a June 10 complaint by wife Lipika Mitra, who said he had been abusing her since their marriage in 2010.

She claimed he used to beat and torture her and once even tried to kill her.

Mr Bharti, who was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to attempt to murder, cruelty towards wife, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon, criminal breach of trust, attempt to cause miscarriage without woman's consent, cheating and criminal intimidation, was on the run soon after police registered an FIR against him.
