New Delhi:
Eighty-six bikers were challaned for violating traffic rules during a special drive near India Gate to check for persons performing stunts on motorcycles.
86 bikers were booked - 20 for dangerous driving, 58 for not wearing helmets and some for drunken driving and triple riding - during the checking last night. 20 motorcycles were impounded.
"Should we consider it our inherent tendency of non-compliance to rules or craze for violation of rules that India Gate and proximity becomes a place for stunts and violation of rules late in the night," said Joint Commissoner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
"There have been reports of stunts and even deaths of bikers. Taking note of it, we put teams yesterday at India Gate with local Police and PCR between 10 pm yesterday and 2 am today," he said, adding "we would continue action to deter motorcyclists from violating rules."
Before this, he said, for three days police prosecuted violations by bikers at Delhi Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Rajghat, BSZ marg, Tilak Marg and India Gate.
"Prosecutions were about 500 in three days. What surpriseS you is that parents are mostly unaware as to what their wards are upto. This I call abdication of parental responsibility which is dangerous for youngsters," Satyendra Garg said.
