New Delhi: Charges have been framed against Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel in a court for allegedly rioting and causing hurt to a builder in East Delhi in 2015.

Besides the Speaker, seven others are named in the case that accuses them of rioting, trespassing, causing mischief and voluntarily causing hurt.

According to the FIR filed following a complaint by Manish Ghai, a local builder, Mr Goel -- a legislator of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party -- and his supporters had allegedly raided one of his houses in Vivek Vihar on the night of February 6, 2015, a day before the Delhi Assembly elections.

It was Mr Ghai's house, where some labourers were staying and the legislator had accused him of stashing liquor, blankets and other stuff for distribution ahead of the polls, the police said.

The AAP leaders had denied these claims, saying they had gone to the house with a police team after making a PCR call in this regard.

Mr Ghai also alleged that the group broke almirah, drawers, kitchen items, window panes and mirrors in the house. When the labourers tried to resist, they were allegedly physically assaulted.
