New Delhi: The brutal murder of a 21-year-old man in broad daylight, in a busy market in the capital was caught on a strategically placed CCTV, which helped the police arrest five suspects, three of them minors, within hours.
The young man, named Sachin, was passing through the market with a friend on a motorbike when the assailants drove up from the opposite direction and pushed him off the bike. They then stabbed him repeatedly, the police said.
On CCTV footage, one of the attackers was seen brandishing his knife to warn passersby against helping the victim. People watched in horror, but no one intervened as the man was killed.
It was only after the attackers fled, leaving Sachin in a pool of blood, that he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors said he was dead.
A case of murder was registered and the police used the CCTV footage to arrest five men, at least three of whom are minors, a senior police officer said. "Three of them are juveniles. We are verifying the age of the remaining two," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) P Karunakaran.
All those arrested are school dropouts, the police said. One of them, a 15-year-old, allegedly told the police that the murdered man had extorted money from him.
Sachin, the police said, used to assist his father at the latter's shop in Madangir. The five men accused of killing him are also locals.
