Delhi chemist beaten up by rogue police guards: FIR registered

The chemist has alleged that the guards beat him after an argument over cough syrup.

New Delhi: Hours after dramatic footage of a chemist beaten up by rogue private security officers was played on news channels, the Delhi Police finally registered a First Information Report or FIR.

The Delhi Police have registered a case of assault and criminal intimidation, but so far they have not named any accused.

Last Tuesday, a man had come inquiring for a cough syrup at chemist Ashok Malik's shop. When Mr Malik said it wasn't available, the man made him talk to his boss over the phone, who was very abusive. Few minutes later, four men came inside the shop and assaulted Mr Malik. The entire episode lasted for half an hour.

Though no one has been identified so far, there is strong suspicion that the private security officers belong to a woman who is related to a top Uttar Pradesh politician.

The police are still scanning the CCTV footage which was given to them this morning, to identify the men.

In terms of evidence, the chemists have also given two numbers to the police, one from which the woman called, and the other used by her employee. They also told the cops that the men had come in two cars, a Fortuner and a Jaguar, which had been parked outside.

After collecting the FIR from the police station, Mr Malik said "I am happy that they have finally registered a case, though after a week. I was told by media that the caller was connected to a top Uttar Pradesh politician, that could be the reason for the delay." Though he also criticised the police for their delayed action, Mr Malik said "I had sent the CCTV footage to the Commissioner of Police through speed post day before yesterday. Only after that I went to the media. Also, on the night of the crime, the PCR and the district police were confusing me as to who will take me for the medical test. So I went and did it on my own."
